Social Anxiety Disorder

Internet help for social anxiety disorder It is somewhat of a miracle that Sally* is sitting in a restaurant, casually eating and exchanging ‘chit-chat’ with a colleague. A few years ago she could barely sip at her mineral water for fear that everyone in the room would scrutinise her every bite if she ordered anything to eat. Casual conversation was the last thing on her mind, when every sip of water brought a flood of anxious thoughts.

She had few friends and mingled in public places as little as possible. When the panic attacks started, Sally sought help and discovered that she was suffering from Social Anxiety disorder (Social Phobia). She has come a long way in the last few years since receiving treatment but her struggle is ongoing. She furrows her brow as she states "Every day is a battle to keep the anxiety at bay".

For millions of South Africans, every day is a struggle with debilitating social anxiety. Anxiety is a universal human trait. We have all had the experience of feeling shy, anxious and self-conscious – whether giving a speech, eating in front of other people or asking the object of your affection out on a date.

When this self-consciousness becomes so intense that a person starts avoiding situations which provoke it, and when the person’s social and/or occupational functioning becomes impaired because of this, it crosses the line from normal anxiety to Social Anxiety disorder.

Internet
In this age of technology, people are dealing more and more with ATM’s, answering machines and e-mail, and less and less with actual people. We push buttons instead of shaking hands. It is argued that this techno-culture breeds Social Anxiety disorder by denying people the essential practice needed to develop social skills. However this same techno-culture may also provide help with the problem in the form of the Internet.

Sally discovered the joy of chatting online when her boyfriend installed a PC in their study at home two years ago. "Having been in cognitive-behavioural therapy and on medication for a year already, I was managing better, but still struggling with the practicalities of interacting socially" Sally states. She smiles wryly as she adds, "I’ve always been socially inept". "I have had few friends because I haven’t known where to begin to start making them" she adds. "My self esteem was dangerously low back then and my lack of friends was only feeding into this" she recounts.

Chatting
Sally then started chatting online. "I found that I could practice certain skills in a very non-threatening environment. I honed my conversational skills, engaged in light conversation, and most of all realised that I am a likeable person. I gained the courage to start using some of the skills I had learnt in real-life settings". She adds "I still chat online and I have formed some meaningful Internet friendships. My social functioning and my self esteem have improved a lot".

Sally’s account represents a success story in support of one side of a very controversial argument. A debate is raging at the moment among health care professionals as to the effects of technology, and the Internet in particular, on our psychological wellbeing. Many people who experience severe anxiety in public may feel quite comfortable expressing themselves in cyberspace.

Stepping stone to real world interaction or place to hide?
Both, says Rick Heimberg Ph.D., director of the Social Anxiety disorder programme at Temple University. Heimberg states that online interaction can be positive if it encourages a socially phobic person to become more extroverted in real-world settings. In contrast, however, it can be negative if excessive time on the Internet replaces face-to-face contact, he says.

Sherry Turkle, a Clinical Psychologist at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, extols the virtues of using the internet to "draw-out" socially phobic people. She states that "people use the Internet to ‘put one toe in the water’ and try out social contacts with which they are less comfortable in the ‘real’".

Dangers
Dr Marcia Slattery, a psychiatrist at the Mayo Clinic highlights the potential dangers involved. She states that "some people I have seen clinically, have become – for lack of a better word - ‘obsessed’ with staying online". She warns against allowing the Internet to become one’s social network in and of itself, to the neglect of real-time relationships.

She adds "It is best to allow yourself to reap the benefits of having a social connection on the net and then generalise the experience in person-to-person contact".

The issue is a controversial one, and it seems to depend not on the technology itself, but on how this technology is utilised. The professionals differ in their relative enthusiasm for the Internet as a therapeutic tool, but they do unanimously agree on one thing, it seems.

That one thing is that chatting on the Internet needs to be kept in perspective and must not be allowed to eclipse face-to-face interactions. When asked for some useful advice, Sally offered this: "The Internet can be a wonderful and a terrible thing, depending on how you use it. Chatting can be great in bolstering your confidence, and in learning social skills, but these things are only valuable in so far as you incorporate them into your real life".

Checklist
Some tips on how to use the Internet safely, responsibly and to your best advantage include:

  • Ask yourself how much time you are actually spending on the computer every day. If it’s more than the time you’re spending interacting face-to-face, you may be slipping into dangerous territory.
  • Ask yourself whether your relationships have improved or deteriorated since you started using the Internet.
  • Ask yourself honestly whether you are using the Internet as an aid to interact with the real world, or whether you are hiding there to avoid it.
  • Ask yourself whether you are using what you have experienced on the net to enhance your real-time interactions or not.
  • Look at your behaviour in cyberspace and ask yourself what it shows you about what you’re afraid of, what your vulnerabilities are, but also to reflect your strengths. Be self-reflective.
  • Give yourself time. Sherry Turkle states that in the most cases she’s seen where the "virtual" was used to enhance the "real". It takes a year before any progress can be seen.
  • It is important to keep your Internet usage in perspective.

Star Trek Box Office

Paramount's Star Trek reboot opened to $7 million at the North American box office in Thursday evening showings that began at 7pm at most of its 3800+ venues, according to Variety.com.

Last weekend, Fox's X-Men Origins: Wolverine grossed just under $5 in showings that began at Friday midnight, on its way to an $85.1m opening weekend.

Star Trek's performance also outpaced last May's Iron Man, which took in over $4m in showings that began Thursday evening, and earned $102.1 million by the close of business Sunday.

Despite the parallels between Iron Man and Star Trek - with Trek even outpacing the Marvel property in some metrics like critical reception and ticket sales % on online sites like Fandango, Paramount and rival studios are still saying tracking suggests Star Trek will not approach Iron Man's weekend figures, or even Wolverine's, though the Hollywood trade reports a number of films have outperformed their tracking indicators in recent months.

We still want to know what your prediction for Star Trek's opening weekend box office tally. Click in the link to take part in our new poll, and look for updates on the film's performance throughout the weekend. Source: http://www.newsarama.com/film/090508-star-trek-box-office.html

As early as 1960, Gene Roddenberry had put together a proposal for the science fiction series which would become Star Trek. Although he publicly marketed it as a Western in outer space, a so-called "Wagon Train to the Stars", he privately told friends that he was actually modeling it on Swift's Gulliver's Travels, intending each episode to act on two levels, first as a suspenseful adventure story, but also as a morality parable.

In the Star Trek universe, humans developed faster-than-light space travel, using a form of propulsion referred to as "warp drive", following a nuclear war and a post-apocalyptic period in the mid-21st century. According to the story timeline, the first warp flight happened on 5 April 2063, and the Vulcans, an advanced alien race, made first contact with Earth on that day after detecting the warp drive signature. Partly as a result of the intervention and scientific teachings of the Vulcans, humans largely overcame many Earth-bound frailties and vices by the middle of the 22nd century, creating a quasi-utopian society where the central role is played not by money, but rather by the need for exploration and knowledge. Later, mankind united with some of the other sentient species of the galaxy, including the Vulcans, to form the United Federation of Planets.

Star Trek stories usually depict the adventures of humans and aliens who serve in the Federation's Starfleet. The protagonists are essentially altruists whose ideals are sometimes only imperfectly applied to the dilemmas presented in the series. The conflicts and political dimensions of Star Trek form allegories for contemporary cultural realities: Star Trek: The Original Series addressed issues of the 1960s, just as later spin-offs have reflected issues of their respective eras. Issues depicted in the various series include war and peace, the value of personal loyalty, authoritarianism, imperialism, class warfare, economics, racism, religion, human rights, sexism and feminism, and the role of technology.[4] Gene Roddenberry stated: "[By creating] a new world with new rules, I could make statements about sex, religion, Vietnam, politics, and intercontinental missiles. Indeed, we did make them on Star Trek: we were sending messages and fortunately they all got by the network." Source: wikipedia.org

Top baby names 2009

"Emma" (and "Isabella," for that matter) has ended "Emily's" 12-year reign as the top name for baby girls. Jacob kept its spot for the 10th year in the row for boy names.

Some interesting tidbits from the Social Security Administration's baby names report for 2009:

--"Barack" didn't make the top 1,000, but it did move up a record 10,126 spots, to No. 2,409.

--"Elvis" is still in the building, but it fell from 673 to 713.

--"Miley," you know, like as in teen queen Miley Cyrus, moved up 152 spots to No. 127. (Her stage name, "Hannah" fell from No. 9 to No. 17.)

--This year’s winner for the biggest jump is Khloe, which is undoubtedly related to the popularity of Khloe Kardashian from the show Keeping Up with the Kardashians. Khloe with a K increased 469 spots to number 196 in 2008, up from 665 in 2007 and 960 in 2006 (the name's first year on the list).

-- Biblical names dominate the top choices for boys while popular culture appears to have influenced some of the girls' names.

BOY NAMES

Top five: Jacob, Michael, Ethan, Joshua and Daniel.
New to the top 10: Alexander
Gone from the top 10: Andrew
New names debuting in the top 1,000: Aaden (343), Chace (655), Marley (764) Kash (779) and Kymani (836). Beckham debuted at 893, perhaps a nod to the British soccer star, David Beckham, who now plays for the Los Angeles Galaxy.

GIRL NAMES:

Top five: Emma, Isabella, Emily, Madison and Ava
New to the top 10: Chloe
New to the top 1,000: Isla (623), Mareli (718), Milagros (731), Dayami (750) and Nylah (821).

But don't be fooled by these "top" baby names 2009 from the Social Security Administration. The list doesn't take into account the same name spelled differently.

So you can still expect to run into a bunch of Braidens and Braydens and Katelyns and Kaitinns when your kid reaches the preschool years. Source: http://blogs.orlandosentinel.com

verizon mifi

Verizon MiFi 3G Router Coming May 17

We’ve been interested in the MiFi 3G router ever since Novatel first announced it, and we were impressed when we saw it in person at the CTIA this year. There’s something about a Wi-Fi router the size of a credit card that has EV-DO integrated for connecting almost anywhere and sharing the connection with up to five devices. Verizon was obviously impressed, too, and have commissioned a model of the Novatel MiFi for their 3G network that will be available on May 17.

The Verizon MiFi 2200 will be available with a couple of monthly data plan options: a $40 plan for 250 MB ($0.10/MB overage) and a $60 plan for 5 GB ($0.05/MB overage). Those who travel infrequently will be able to get an unsubsidized MiFi and use a 24-hour day pass for $15 as needed. The MiFi will run you $100 after a $50 rebate at Verizon on May 17. I have to admit I am seriously considering replacing my USB Verizon modem with one of these for the ease of use it provides.

KFC riot

KFC DENY'S CHICKEN RIOT , BUT PHONE STILL OFF HOOK

Who could have predicted that handing out free meals during the worst economic collapse since the Great Depression would be so messy? KFC locations across America were hammered yesterday by an overwhelming demand for free fowl, after Oprah Winfrey promoted a giveaway for two pieces of KFC's new grilled chicken, two sides, and a biscuit. New York City was particularly hard hit; tipsters tell Midtown Lunch that there were about 50 people "crammed into a very tiny space" during lunch hour at the 50th & 7th Avenue KFC.

And then there was the reported sit-in at the KFC on 42nd Street between Madison and Park. KFC spokesperson Laurie Schalow tells the AP, "We didn't prepare for this extreme. Some customers were upset because they couldn't get their chicken, but there was no riot." However, the phone at that location has been off the hook since yesterday's incident, so there's clearly some sort of cover-up going on. Why haven't we heard from any of the brave demonstrators occupying the KFC?

The coupons for the free meals can no longer be downloaded from the website, but they are valid until May 19th. To those dauntless consumers determined to redeem it, we say Godspeed. But after watching this video from inside a Tyson Foods slaughterhouse, you may want to just stick with the biscuit.

Manny Ramirez

LOS ANGELES -- Kim Kardashian was in the house Wednesday night, wearing a jersey of the hometown team that's totally hot.

Yet the most notable piece of clothing after the Dodgers beat the last-place Nationals, 10-3, was the cap of manager Joe Torre, now en route to Cooperstown as a memento of a 13th home win to open a season.

Never mind that the actual Major League record for such achievements is 21, set in 1880 by the Chicago White Stockings. It had been so widely reported that the Dodgers were tied with the 1911 Detroit Tigers for the modern-day record that a celebration apparently was anticipated, with the ordered postgame meal being sizzling prime steaks catered by Ruth's Chris, served on white tablecloths in the clubhouse food room.

"I'm glad we got it, only because it becomes a distraction and you get to the point where it's all you're shooting for," Torre said. "Then maybe you have a letdown even if you don't realize it. Hopefully, this is a stepping-stone on the way to something more important."

The Dodgers ran their overall win streak to seven, have won eight of the past nine and are 19-5 since a 2-3 start. They lead the National League West by 6 1/2 games, their largest lead since 2004. This one was the kind of victory the Dodgers have been grinding out this year, a 2-1 game blown open with a seven-run sixth inning with contributions up and down the lineup.

"We just kept coming at them all night," Torre said. "It was a little touch-and-go for a while."

Starting pitcher Clayton Kershaw made so many pitches (99) he was gone after five innings, just long enough to qualify for his first victory of the year. James McDonald made his first relief appearance since losing his starting job to Jeff Weaver and pitched a perfect inning, looking as he did last October. Left-hander Brent Leach made his Major League debut with a scoreless ninth inning and received a shaving-cream pie in the face from fellow lefty Will Ohman.

Offensively, Rafael Furcal finally looked like the leadoff hitter he was before back surgery, with three hits and three runs scored. Russell Martin, who came into the game hitting .222, also had three hits. The first six hitters in the lineup had RBIs and the game became a blowout with a seven-run sixth inning that included a two-run double by self-proclaimed "double maniac" Manny Ramirez and a two-run single by James Loney.

"It's the consistency of our offense, pitching and defense," Martin said. "We haven't made many mistakes. We're not helping the other team out at all. We're bringing the game to the other team."

Torre, who has tried to deflect the importance of the streak, said he was just glad the Dodgers didn't take the Nationals for granted.

"The only thing you're uneasy about was everybody's assuming they're a pushover because they haven't got a good record [7-18], but last year on the road trip, they swept us in Washington," Torre said. "They're offensive-minded with guys who can hit home runs. In order for us to win, we have to pitch. It wasn't pretty, I'm just glad Kershaw got outs when he did."

Kershaw's night started with a 31-pitch first inning that included loading the bases and striking out the side. He had five strikeouts by the second inning, none after. He's allowed just two runs in 19 innings at home (0.95 ERA), compared to 16 runs in 14 innings on the road (10.29).

"We're not going 81-0 at home," predicted Kershaw. "Sooner or later, it's going to happen. I don't think anybody really cares about the streak. We just want to build as big a lead as possible, especially with the other teams in our division scuffling."

Torre was able to use the hefty lead to get work for McDonald and Leach, the former trying to bounce back, the latter looking to make his debut.

"I made a slight adjustment and went back to the way I used to be," said McDonald, who lost his starting job because of an 8.16 ERA. "I just can't be so nitpicky. I have to be aggressive with the hitters and remember not to be afraid of contact, don't nibble. I just need that mindframe, the attack the hitters. I got that aggressiveness back to challenge guys. Before, I would catch myself thinking negatively before I was even on the mound. I have to go out and feel confident."

Leach finally got in a game after sitting since Saturday.

"Just count your blessings that you're here," he said. "Remember it's the same 60 feet, six inches you've been pitching all along."

Manny Ramirez is one of the best players in the Major Leagues. What this blogger does not understand is why these guys need ROIDS at all. He is a good ball player (and I am biting my tounge as a yankee fan saying this)

Speaking of Yankees, maybe they KNEW this information on Manny already, and thus, the real reason why they never picked him up. AROD, PETITE, GIAMBI I guess were enough. (Did I miss anyone?)

Ok, with that said, here's the plan - google: MLB Top Home Run Hitters, TOP RBI Leaders, and then see what their ROOKIE CARD Looked like :)

Pay Off Credit Card Debt

Can you pay off Credit Card Debt?

First thing I learned when trying to make ends meet was a pretty simple concept...
here is that simple concept:

* Make More Money (yes, I said it, make more money) and no I am not talking about getting rich overnight! Because the only way that happens is if a rich relative dies, or you win the lottery or Bill Gates figures you can use 100K to get on your feet. But most americans are about $5000 short a year from living in comfort , the only problem with that theory is , if you made an extra $5000 a year, you'd be another $5000 short each year - if you catch my drift!

* Discipline and get rid of credit cards , 1 at a time - you can do this by some simple math. First, gather ALL and I mean ALL you credit card statements and list them by Name/Acct No. Then find the % rate (APR) , Then find the Monthly Payments, Then Find the amount of time left to pay off the card. Once you do, you are 3/4 of the way to FREEDOM....

THEN COMES THE FUN PART - Choose your monthly payouts (that you can really make) and start:

1. Pay OFF the High Credit Card Interest rates first
2. SKIP a payment on the lower ones if you have too
3. Once the Higher Ones are paid off in order, start doubling up on the lower ones
4. USE your monthly budget you set aside all the way till the end.
5. DO NOT REAPPLY FOR MORE CARDS.

That's it - with these simple guidelines, you will be well on your way to a Better Tommorow :)

Vanda pharmaceuticals

Learn more about Vanda Pharmaceuticals by bookmarking this blog.

.vanda pharmaceuticals Inc. (Nasdaq: VNDA) announced today that the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has granted marketing approval of Fanapt(TM) (iloperidone) for the acute treatment of adult patients with schizophrenia. The approval was supported by two placebo-controlled Phase III clinical studies comparing Fanapt(TM) to placebo and active control in patients with schizophrenia, as well as safety data from more than 3,000 patients.

Fanapt(TM) is a mixed dopamine D2 / serotonin 5HT2A receptor antagonist, and belongs to the class of atypical antipsychotics.

"The approval of Fanapt(TM) marks a new opportunity for many patients with schizophrenia, who experience only partial responses to current therapies, to achieve better control of their symptoms," remarked Dr. Peter J. Weiden, Professor of Psychiatry and Director of the Psychotic Disorders Program at the University of Illinois at Chicago. "Having Fanapt(TM) available is a major help for our patients in offering an effective antipsychotic with an excellent side effect profile across a wide range of major tolerability problems associated with other antipsychotic therapies."

The efficacy of Fanapt(TM) for the treatment of schizophrenia was supported by two placebo-controlled short-term (4- and 6-week) trials. Both trials enrolled patients who met the DSM-III/IV criteria for schizophrenia, and Fanapt(TM) was shown to be superior to placebo in controlling symptoms of schizophrenia across doses of 12mg to 24mg per day. The recommended target dose range of Fanapt(TM) is 12mg to 24 mg per day. Titration to the target dose of 12mg per day can be achieved in 4 days.

Vanda plans to make Fanapt(TM) available in pharmacies later this year.

Bob White object

UFO'S _ Unidentified (dont know what it was, not necessarily from mars)
_ Flying (its not on the ground, but its actually flying (or hovering in which case it'd be a UHO))
_Object (it's something that is bigger than a breadbox?)

Ok ........ well, for all you Twilight Zone Fans..........

On May 6, at 10:00 EST, the UFO Hunters will address the story of Bob White. If you don't know who he is, I will give you some basics.

In 1985, near the Colorado - Utah border, White and a traveling companion encountered a large UFO (OR UHO) As the object eventually sped away, an orange object fell from it. White located the artifact, claiming that it was part of the UFO.

He has spent many years trying to prove this, but so far, he has not been successful. If the information I am getting is accurate, that may be going to change.

The History Channel series may claim that the metal White recovered matches no known aluminum alloy made on Earth. We shall see.

For more on White's encounter, see my article, A UFO Artifact - Did Bob White Find Piece of UFO?. If any of you watch the show, leave a comment on what you think about it.

If you want to find out who are ILLEGAL ALIENS (or check into the same computers the big boys do) then you should check out this website.

Schools out for summer

Schools out for summer lyrics

Well we got no choice
All the girls and boys
Makin all that noise
'Cause they found new toys
Well we can't salute ya
Can't find a flag
If that don't suit ya
That's a drag

School's out for summer
School's out forever
School's been blown to pieces

No more pencils
No more books
No more teacher's dirty looks

Well we got no class
And we got no principles
And we got no innocence
We can't even think of a word that rhymes

School's out for summer
School's out forever
School's been blown to pieces

No more pencils
No more books
No more teacher's dirty looks

Out for summer
Out till fall
We might not go back at all

School's out forever
School's out for summer
School's out with fever
School's out completely

Mindy Kaling

Next Tina Fay?

Look out, America: Mindy Kaling is launching her takeover. The writer and actress — best known as Kelly Kapoor from The Office — has just signed a big deal with NBC that means she'll keep writing for and appearing on The Office while developing a potential new sitcom in which she'd be the star.

But wait, it gets better. Kaling — who also writes a funny blog that she hasn't updated in way too long — might want that show to be a buddy comedy about women, in the vein of Flight of the Conchords. Apparently, one of her pre-Office writing jobs was a pilot for the WB about two best friends straight out of college, and she's "always wanted to do another show about women."

Gotta say, I love this news. Kaling's hilarious and adorable, and I could definitely see her following in Fey's footsteps. It's also a relief to know she won't be leaving The Office anytime soon, because every time Kelly turns up, it's golden. What do you make of this deal?

World's oldest dog

WORLDS OLDEST DOG is a POODLE !!

.......

Fred sent a link (Thanks, Fred) on my post about Chanel, the Guinness Book of World Records oldest dog at 20.

Fred’s link is to an April 5, 2009 story from the Daily Mountain Eagle in Jasper, Alabama about a Poodle who is verified to be 27 years old.

When Brenda and Barney Harvill found out that they couldn’t have children of their own, they adopted a tiny Poodle puppy and named her Taffy Gayle. She has been their baby ever since. (The newspaper incorrectly identified her as a “teacup.” You can see that she isn’t.)

Taffy Gayle was born Sept. 22, 1982 and the Harvills adopted her from a kennel a week before Thanksgiving that year. Although Taffy Gayle, is now blind, deaf and missing most of her teeth, they love her as much now as the day she came into their family 27 years ago.

“Never having any children, I just think it’s a blessing that God’s let us keep her this long,” Brenda Harvill said.

Like many Poodles Taffy Gayle enjoys playing dress up. Brenda’s thrift store purchases include T-shirts, sweaters, and a pink party dress. She wears her party dress to celebrate her birthdays when she gets a little cupcake with a candle on it.

Her dog food diet is supplemented with potted meat, stewed chicken and hamburger. Taffy Gayle also gets a baby aspirin each morning and eye drops two times a day.

The petite Poodle is not entirely dependent. Even though she is blind, she knows her way around her territory well enough to find her food and water bowls.

When they got Taffy Gayle, the couple had a Chihuahua named Candy and liked the idea of having Taffy Candy. Brenda gave Taffy her own middle name when she registered her with the American Kennel Club.

So if we doubted the word of this couple about the dog’s age (and I wouldn’t want to be around anyone who would question these lovely people) there is documentation from the AKC to prove that she was born September 22, 1983, 27 years ago.

So why isn’t she the World’s Oldest Living Dog in the Guinness Book? The short answer is that Guinness is a commercial enterprise. It is entertainment, not an almanac. They don’t have the resources to go around the world seeking out record holders.

People must apply to Guinness, and they are besieged with applications. Applicants must fill out long questionnaires, supply documentation, have their claims authenticated by people whose character is above reproach, and produce media stories.

Some people enjoy this kind of recognition and publicity.
Some people don’t.

The Kids Browser -

I’ve just discovered the KidZui browser. It looks pretty cool, you create a unique account and can login to access games, videos, and lots of other “kid friendly” stuff. I’d like you to both check it out and let me know what you think and find by writing a blog post about it here. I’ve created an account for you both, ask me and I’ll tell you your login credentials. (Hint: Your userids are the same ones you’re using for our blog. Rachel’s is the same as she’s using for Club Penguin. Everyone’s password is the same as Rachel’s Club Penguin password.) I’ve downloaded the program already on my laptop, we’ll need to download and install it on other computers too.

banana boat rat

A banana boat, often referred to simply as a banana, is an unpowered recreational boat designed to be pulled by a larger boat. Riders sit astride a large tube which is supported by two smaller tubes which provide balance and footrests, allowing them to experience some of the thrill of moving fast and close to the water much more easily and safely than by water-skiing or surfing and they are therefore a popular ride for children. Many large motor yachts or luxury yachts have a banana as one of their onboard "toys", but any powered boat can pull a banana, and they are sometimes available as a commercial ride at holiday resorts. Most models seat between three and ten people. Double models with two seating tubes side by side are available. Banana boats are often yellow and are sometimes actually moulded into the shape of a banana.

Rats are various medium-sized, long-tailed rodents of the superfamily Muroidea. "True rats" are members of the genus Rattus, the most important of which to humans are the black rat, Rattus rattus, and the brown rat, Rattus norvegicus. Many members of other rodent genera and families are also called rats and share many characteristics with true rats.

Put the both togheter and you have the Banana Boat Rat -

This is also known as typical transportation through swamps in the jungle and "jungle meat = rat"

So anyway, whats the point?

I don't know, just something I figured may be of interest to at least one human being !

anodyne therapy

Anodyne therapy is a unique light therapy used for the treatment of pain. This infrared therapy effectively brings pain relief without the use of drugs and is non-invasive. It does this by harnessing the healing power of infrared light. Infrared light emits wave lengths of energy and it can penetrate up to 5cm into the body.

The Anodyne treatment system is simple and painless. Four flexible pads, each containing 60 small infrared lights, are placed directly on the skin over the area of pain or injury. Therapy pads are flexible so they can fit the shape of parts of the body. The pad is in direct contact with the skin so the light can be better absorbed by the skin. Energy from the lights penetrates beneath the skin and is absorbed by deep tissue causing the body to release nitric oxide, making the blood vessels become larger. After just 30 minutes of treatment, blood flow is enhanced by 400 percent, and this boost in local circulation persists for several hours after the pads are removed.

Anodyne light therapy provides a painless, non - invasive treatment for anyone where an increase in circulation would help with relief of pain and inflammation or a condition characterized by poor circulation

It is fast becoming a popular treatments for diabetic peripheral neuropathy and a wide variety of other clinical conditions such as fibromyalgia, carpal tunnel syndrome, strains and sprains, and wounds of any nature. Anodyne infrared therapy is used by the US military to treat elite soldiers in the Navy SEALs, Army Rangers, and Special Forces. Hospitals and nursing homes use it to relieve most any kind of chronic pain. Anodyne therapy can be used during occupational therapy treatments to make other therapy more bearable, such as improving strength, flexibility, movement and function. Source: detox-for-life.com

Ummm - A New Flash Game?

According to the Twitter feed of New York Times executive editor Bill Keller, the science writers at his paper are spending some quality time with an infectious little game called Sneeze in which your goal is — as you might guess — to sneeze in the right spot and infect as many people as possible with whatever virus you’re carrying.

Technically the game appears under the title Stop Swine Flu and is described as an educational exercise in how fast disease can spread in a relatively small area when people sneeze without covering their mouths. All you need to do to get a high score is to sneeze in an area where a lot of people will pass, spreading the virus as they try to make it from point A to point B. In the level above, I infected 90% of the area using this strategy, which is precisely what this game is trying to point out.

Moral of the story? Don’t sneeze at random people in public places and keep your distance from those actively spreading their germs around. Clearly they haven’t played this game…

THE FAKE PHONE REVIEW.

biggest loser recipes

On MAY 11TH CFS will begin the Biggest Loser Competition. Contestants will be weighed, measured and have to do three WODs over a three day period. This will allow us to tally and score an individuals performance so that someone can't just lose 40 pounds and take home the big prize. We are looking for individuals to lose pounds, inches and gain overall athletic performance.

The cost of the contest will be $5. Top male and female competitors will receive $100 plus one month free at CFS! This will be a personal achievement (no teams) and a way for all of us to get dialed into our eating habits. I would like everyone to encourage one another, talk about what you are eating, how is it effecting your WODs and of course at least give it a try. To help everyone I will post recipes of both zone and paleo meals. This weekend those interested should start their healthy grocery shopping, and start planning your strategy some ideas:

MEATS/Protein: lean beef, ground turkey, tofu, eggs, non-fat cottage cheese, non-fat string cheese, fish, sea food, tuna and chicken (yogurt is a protein, however it is also a carb, same with milk).

Carbs: veggies (stay away from white starchy veggies), buy: asparagus, lettuce, celery, broccoli, spinach, cucumber, bell pepper and sweet potatoes. Fruit (stay away from bananas and raisin) buy: apples, oranges, pineapple, grapes, kiwis and strawberries. If you want to keep grains in your diet try steel cut oats for your oatmeal and wheat breads (check the labels).

Fats: nuts (almonds, cashews, macadamia), avocado, olive oil, bacon (in moderation!), peanut butter and light mayo.

Now some of you maybe wondering what's wrong with bananas- they are loaded with sugar, now if your choice is a banana or a Milky Way, have the banana. If you are looking for potassium, kiwis offer more potassium then bananas (and Fathia recommends eating the skin if possible).

So, as you head out to the store, words of advice: stick to the parameter of the store, avoid going down the isles (most food found here is processed), read the labels (1 block equals: 9g carbs, 7g protein and 1.5g fats), if following paleo remember to choose lean products and stay away from gluten (breads/pasta/rice).

These food options are just ideas, visit ZONE or Robb Wolf's websites for more.

REMEMBER, YOU ARE NOT ALONE! Fathia, "DOC", Josh, Cindy, DJ and myself are more then willing to answer questions or help you out. Fathia has even offered a free one on one for those that attended the meeting last night to start the contest. For those of you that missed the meeting but still want that nutritional edge contact Fathia for some personal coaching for a small fee.

On a side note, I understand not everyone is "trying to loose weight" and this might not be something you are interested in. I will tell you from experience, eating better (following zone/paleo) helps your post WOD recovery, many claim it helps them reach new PRs and feel better while working out. Your nutrition should be important, so even if you aren't interested in the game, I encourage you to try some of the recipes and learn a bit more about what it means to eat "healthy". Keep us updated on your transformation as well.

PS. None of us made it to tomorrows events, we all feel we gave our everything and held nothing back. Thank you everyone for your support. We will be going to watch tomorrow starting at 9am, should wrap up around 1pm. Source: http://www.crossfitsolano.com/crossfit_solano/2009/05/biggest-loser.html

So - One Question - TItle Lost - Pictures Online!

Is this the mafia?

People are asked a question about something, and that person gives an opinion, and that opinion ticks off people, who now I guess people have the right to ruin, or attempt to ruin someone's life on the internet.

Come on people!! Give it a rest.

I am personally sick and tired of the internet being used like a kindergarten tattle tale source for so-called Adults. This lady gave her opinion, based on her morals, which come from ethics, and now is slandered online.

Hey, do you like chineese food? NO!!!! You bigot!!

LOL - strange, but stupid , and still entertaining world we live in!

I guess if you look like THIS GIRL though, it's all good :)

CSN STORES UPDATES

CSN Stores is also taking steps to shore up its e-commerce infrastructure, to ensure a consistently reliable shopping experience across its more than 200 online storefronts, Conine says. “One of our biggest beliefs is that our sites have to be fast and consistent, regardless of whether we’re attracting new customers or bringing back old ones,” he says.

Although CSN is also looking into technology from providers like Liquid Pixels and Adobe Scene7 for more rich media displays, which have proven effective at converting furniture shoppers into buyers, the retailer is mostly focused this year on ensuring reliable site performance.

“When our marketing group plans a promotion to increase customer loyalty, it can cause traffic to hit our server farms in different ways, and it can all be for naught if any of our sites don’t perform,” Conine says. “So we’re making sure we have sufficient infrastructure and a solid enough system in place.”

Among CSN’s recent investments is a backup data center to cover power outages; new network switching technology from Cisco Systems Inc. to increase security; and site-monitoring technology from Coradiant that identifies problems in online shopping sessions.

In addition, CSN is continuing to upgrade the software code underlying its ASP.net e-commerce platform and migrating toward the Microsoft SQL Enterprise Edition database platform. Now, instead of occasionally running into traffic bottlenecks that can slow site performance, CSN’s database system can more consistently handle simultaneous requests by shoppers for product content.

Boosting conversions

At CPA2Biz, the strategy this year is to build on the Blue Martini e-commerce platform from Escalate Retail installed in 2007. “We have seen a 20% increase in visitor-to-purchaser conversion rates year over year,” Rothchild says.

Rothchild chalks up the increase to several improvements CPA2Biz has made within the past two years. In addition to the Blue Martini e-commerce platform, which is being rebranded as Escalate e-Commerce, the retailer has also deployed site search and navigation technology from Endeca Technologies Inc., Salesforce.com as a customer relationship management application, and web analytics from Coremetrics. Earlier this year, it deployed a Bazaarvoice customer ratings and reviews application.

“We now have more value-add information on our product detail page, such as customer reviews and excerpts from other product pages, that help customers make easier on-the-spot buying decisions,” Rothchild says.

Still, deciding to deploy new technology this year has been tougher than usual, Rothchild adds. As an example she points to the retailer’s careful examination of Salesforce.com as a customer relationship management tool.

“We really scrutinized if it was necessary, including finding out what other retailers had paid for a similar deployment, as we considered if this was just a nice-to-have or something we had to have to build customer relationships,” says Mike McCarthy, vice president of engineering for CPA2Biz.

Before it makes more sizable technology investments, however, CPA2Biz will work on deploying more of the functionality in its existing applications to ensure it’s getting the most bang for its buck in the economic downturn, Rothchild says. In the Escalate e-Commerce platform, for instance, it will work with the vendor and its own I.T. staff to deploy a Relationship Management module that will provide shoppers more personalized offers.

“Rather than just cross-selling by showing ‘customers who bought this also bought that,’ we’ll be able to make a special offer, such as for a particular customer once she buys more than $500 in the past month,” she says. CPA2Biz is also considering the use a new Page Builder application within the Endeca software suite, which is designed to make it easier to pull in multiple types of content, including videos, to develop merchandising pages.

Customer experience

Improving the online shopping experience within a tight budget is also a key focus this year at 1-800-Flowers.com Inc. After noticing the economy starting to slow down in the fall of 2007, the floral, food and gifts retailer developed a three-part growth strategy: Taking care of existing customers, reducing operating costs, and pushing ahead with innovative retailing technology and processes, says president Chris McCann.

That meant choosing the right technology partners, and only after making a strong business case, he adds. 1-800-Flowers, which has long operated its multiple web sites on a homegrown e-commerce platform, began migrating to IBM Corp.’s WebSphere Commerce platform last fall, starting with The Popcorn Factory in its food and gifts group. It plans to eventually deploy WebSphere Commerce for all of its more than 12 retail web sites, providing a common shopping experience with robust customizing capabilities for its staff of more than 150 I.T. professionals, McCann says.

For a relatively short-term gain, it recently deployed on its flagship floral retail site 1-800-Flowers.com live chat from LivePerson Inc. and a consumer-generated ratings, reviews and stories platform from Bazaarvoice. The live chat application has already helped to improve conversion rates, and has attracted positive comments from customers who say they appreciate having the service available even if they haven’t yet used it, McCann says.

Bazaarvoice is supporting an innovative marketing promotion for Mother’s Day, the site’s biggest sales generator, says Vib Prasad, the retailer’s senior director of web merchandising. The promotion, Spotlight a Mom, lets customers compete to win free vacation trips by submitting stories about what makes their mom special. Winning stories are shown on the retailer’s home page, and anyone who views one of the stories can also use on-site applications to forward them to Twitter, Facebook and other social networking sites.

As valuable as the LivePerson and Bazaarvoice applications have proven so far, however, 1-800-Flowers only agreed to test them after each vendor agreed to favorable terms. “They worked with us to make sure our cost to test their products was reasonable for us,” McCann says. He adds that the vendor also offered assistance in getting the most value out of their applications, such as the most productive times during shopping sessions to launch a live chat window. Too soon can overwhelm shoppers; too late doesn’t help, McCann says.

Such help can ease the decision process, he adds. Economic downturn or not, Internet retailers can still benefit from a plethora of technology and service offerings. The hard part is choosing the ones that best address a retailer’s most pressing needs without exceeding closely watched budgets. Source: http://www.internetretailer.com/article.asp?id=30267

Margarita recipe

Starting Cinco De Mayo With Best Margarita Recipe

People around the country are starting their Cinco De Mayo happy hour with a glass of Margarita. If you have not yet, make sure you have the Margarita mix for the best frozen margarita recipe to start your own happy hour cocktail time.

First make sure you have the following margarita recipe ingredients.

* 6oz Minute Maid frozen concentrated limeade

* 6oz water

* 4oz tequila

* 2oz Cointreau, Triple Sec or Grand Marnier

In fact I have heard that instead of water you can even serve it with a very light beer. However, I had never tried a Margarita recipe with a light beer. So, don't take my word for it.

Honestly, I have never liked the pre-made Margarita mix, rather would recommend you to make your own mix for a better Margarita recipe.

Now, how to make your margarita recipe.

If using salt, place in a shallow dish. Moisten the rim of a rocks glass with a dampened paper towel, then dip in salt. Fill the glass with ice; add tequila, lime juice, and Cointreau; and stir a few times until chilled. Serve immediately.

Chevys

Chevys Fresh Mex Melt and On the Border Rocks. If you ever want to have some great mexican food, these 2 spots are great.

Nothing like it!

The menus at these restaurants contain basically the same deal: tacos, burritos, nachos, sizzling platters of fajitas, shredded lettuce, unripe tomatoes, guacamole that comes out of a bag, sour cream, some version of chimichanga, white meat chicken everywhere, a token salmon dish, refried beans, rice.

Have a Pacifico Beer and the deal is done! :)

Oprah KFC

For two days only, KFC is handing out free Oprah-backed grilled chicken coupons. It's the company's new recipe and part of its new image. ...

You see, KFC hired some million-dollar PR firm that figured replacing the word "fried" with "grilled" would make the chain's genetically engineered birds sound healthier and the company would sell more chicken. Its new slogan: "un-think what you thought about KFC."

Yeah, right. I'll do that right after I un-think what I thought about Dominos Pizza's YouTube special. I don't know what's worse, Oprah's Grilled Chicken or Obama Chicken Fingers.

Popeye's Deep Fried Discount
Next thing you know, Jared is going to leave Subway for a new finger-lickin' endorsement contract.

Free chicken scares me. Here's why. Did you hear about what happened when Popeye's Chicken and Biscuits gave out free chicken last month? It got ugly when they ran out. Watch the video.

Anyway, before you go storming your local KFC, read the rules and print a coupon, which includes two free sides and a biscuit. It's a recession, money's tight and I'll stop hatin'. Source: www.blackvoices.com

Oh, these DOLLAR STORES has REAL Deal's going on RIGHT NOW! Get $100 bucks!

Unthink KFC

Born and raised in Henryville, Indiana, Sanders passed through several professions in his lifetime. Sanders first served his fried chicken in 1930 in the midst of the Great Depression at a gas station he owned in North Corbin, Kentucky. The dining area was named "Sanders Court & Café" and was so successful that in 1936 Kentucky Governor Ruby Laffoon granted Sanders the title of honorary Kentucky Colonel in recognition of his contribution to the state's cuisine. The following year Sanders expanded his restaurant to 142 seats, and added a motel he bought across the street.[9] When Sanders prepared his chicken in his original restaurant in North Corbin, he prepared the chicken in an iron skillet, which took about 30 minutes to do, too long for a restaurant operation. In 1939, Sanders altered the cooking process for his fried chicken to use a pressure fryer, resulting in a greatly reduced cooking time comparable to that of deep frying. In 1940 Sanders devised what came to be known as his Original Recipe.

The Sanders Court & Café generally served travelers, often those headed to Florida, so when the route planned in the 1950s for what would become Interstate 75 bypassed Corbin, he sold his properties and traveled the U.S. to sell his chicken to restaurant owners. The first to take him up on the offer was Pete Harman in South Salt Lake, Utah; together, they opened the first "Kentucky Fried Chicken" outlet in 1952.[12] By the early 1960s Kentucky Fried Chicken was sold in over 600 franchised outlets in both the United States and Canada. One of the longest-lived franchisees of the older Col. Sanders' chicken concept, as opposed to the KFC chain, was the Kenny Kings chain. The company owned many Northern Ohio diner-style restaurants, the last of which closed in 2004. Sanders sold the entire KFC franchising operation in 1964 for $2 million USD Since that time, the chain has been sold three more times, most recently to PepsiCo, which made it part of its Tricon Global Restaurants division, which in turn was spun off in 1997, and has now been renamed to Yum! Brands. Additionally, Colonel Sanders' nephew, Lee Cummings, took his own Kentucky Fried Chicken franchises (and a chicken recipe of his own) and converted them to his own "spin-off" restaurant chain, Lee's Famous Recipe Chicken.

Today, some of the older KFC restaurants have become famous in their own right. One such restaurant is located in Marietta, Georgia. This store is notable for a 56-foot (17 m) tall sign that looks like a chicken. The sign, known locally as the Big Chicken, was built for an earlier fast-food restaurant on the site called Johnny Reb's Chick, Chuck and Shake. It is often used as a travel reference point in the Atlanta area by locals and pilots.

The original handwritten recipe is kept locked away at the KFC corporate headquarters in Louisville, Kentucky as a closely-guarded secret.[15] Only two members within the Yum! corporation know the recipe in its entirety. Source: Wikipedia.org/wiki/KFC
